Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe and Beaumont Family Medicine Center, St. Clair Shores host art and wellness festival

Art plays a psychological and physiological role in our lives. As a result, Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe has partnered with area organizations, including the Detroit Institute of Arts, to bring the benefits of art to area residents by hosting SPLASH, an art and wellness festival.

“In addition to bringing beautiful pieces of art from the DIA to the community, activities planned are designed to involve and encourage the community to understand and address issues such as depression, anxiety and obesity,” says Asha Shajahan, M.D., family medicine, Beaumont, Grosse Pointe. “Our plan is to create a ‘splash’ in the medical community to help alleviate the burden of chronic disease.”

On Saturday, Sept. 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., several activities will be held at the Beaumont Family Medicine Center, 21400 Eleven Mile Road, St. Clair Shores. Activities include:

  • Bus tour and 5K Color Walk/Run through St. Clair Shores to enjoy displayed paintings, courtesy of the DIA’s Inside|Out Program
  • Performances by the Grosse Pointe Theater and the Detroit Medical Orchestra
  • Initial That! A hands-on art workshop conducted by the DIA
  • Fitness dance classes: Zumba, Bollyfit and yoga
  • Art gallery featuring the work of local artists

Twenty stations will offer interactive activities such as pottery, painting and Integrative Medicine services and relaxation techniques. An art competition, judged by DIA experts, gives local high school students the opportunity to have their winning pieces displayed at the Beaumont Family Medicine Center and Shore Pointe Nursing Center.

“We hope to generate excitement around art and medicine in the community,” Dr. Shajahan says. “Participants can experience the joy associated with engaging in the different forms of art.”
