Beaumont Health System offers free ‘Healthy Michigan’ sign-up assistance

Beaumont Health System has financial counselors available at all three hospitals to assist people with signing up for “Healthy Michigan,” a Medicaid program launched by the Michigan Department of Community Health. Sign-ups began on April 1, 2014. During the first week, Beaumont financial counselors assisted more than 160 people in Royal Oak, Troy and Grosse Pointe.

According to the Michigan Department of Community Health, “The Healthy Michigan Plan will encourage healthy behaviors and personal responsibility, help low-income Michigan resident’s access affordable health coverage, and reduce uncompensated care that shifts costs onto businesses and taxpayers.”

Farmington Hills resident Rita Romanelli recently visited Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak to take advantage of the assistance. She says the cost of health care has prevented her from seeing a doctor for the past two years. Now, she finally has coverage.

“When I went to Beaumont, the staff was wonderful. They were kind and helpful and made it look so easy. They were unbiased. They presented me with whatever was out there and educated me about it. They made it easy for me to make a decision,” Romanelli says.

Beaumont Director of Patient Registration and Hospitality Services Cheryl Webster adds, “Our patients have expressed overwhelming gratitude for the support and guidance from our financial counselors. One patient finished applying for care in our office and then showed the financial counselor a cut she was hoping would heal on its own. The financial counselor walked her to the ER so she could get stitches. We had another patient who needed a colonoscopy and was excited to be able to get it scheduled without fear that the expense would be too much for her small budget to handle.”

Beaumont financial counselors can help patients:

  • apply for governmental programs like Medicaid/Healthy Michigan, Affordable Care Act / Healthcare insurance plan
  • set up payment plans for current prior balances.
