Beaumont, Royal Oak opens spine fracture clinic

Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak has opened a new Spine Fracture Clinic. The clinic allows medical staff to rapidly assess a person's back pain to determine if and how he can be helped medically through an interactive, multidisciplinary team of orthopedic surgeons, neuroradiologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and therapists.

People with a vertebral spine fracture often experience a sudden onset of back pain. Standing or walking makes the pain worse and lying down eases the pain. They often have limited back movement and some find a measurable height loss.

Now, patients can be referred by a primary care doctor for an appointment at the Beaumont Spine Fracture Clinic at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. The clinic is open Mondays from noon - 4:30 p.m. and Tuesday-Friday from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. It is on the first floor of the South Tower.

"This is a new option to rapidly and definitively assess and treat patients for spine fractures and make course-of-care decisions," says Chetan Patel, M.D., co-director of the Beaumont Spine Fracture Clinic with Jeff Wilseck, D.O., neuroradiology. "It's time to get aggressive in treating this age old problem."

Patients visiting the Spine Fracture Clinic will have imaging work done and a thorough assessment of their spine completed during their initial appointment. All of Beaumont's resources (orthopedics, imaging, radiology, physical therapy and bracing) are involved in care decisions with all non-operative and operative treatments considered. Appointments are scheduled through the Beaumont Appointment Center by calling toll-free 1-800-328-8542. Patients can also call toll-free 1-866-552-0551 for more information or 248-898-1230 to speak directly to a nurse practitioner.
