Health Professional Recovery Program

The State of Michigan's Health Professionals Recovery Program (HPRP) helps identify and evaluate health professionals impaired by substance abuse or mental health disorders. It makes referrals to treatment programs and provides active, long-term monitoring. Through participation in HPRP, the licensee usually will be able to be diverted from the disciplinary track that would involve the licensing board of his or her profession.

This program is:

  • confidential
  • designed to encourage health professionals to seek treatment before their impairment harms a patient or damages their careers through disciplinary or regulatory action
  • supported by the Michigan State Medical Society [msms.org] and Michigan Osteopathic Association [http://www.mi-osteopathic.org]
  • for all types of health professionals
  • aimed at recovery of participants so they may safely return to practice
  • designed to protect the safety of the general public
