Beaumont Health leaders and physicians were recently invited to hear Bud Hammes, Ph.D., present the Respecting Choices advance directives planning program.
Dr. Hammes shared his work and learnings from the Respecting Choices program, which he leads at Gunderson Hospital in La Crosse, Wisconsin. As a result of the joint effort by clinicians and trained planning facilitators at Gunderson, 96 percent of Gunderson patients now have a plan for advance care, also known as advance directives. The program has been implemented internationally by more than 100 organizations.
Paul Reitemeier, Ph.D., corporate director of Clinical Ethics, and others from Beaumont Health's Ethics committees, have identified this program as, "an exceptional method for improving the advance care planning experience for the patients and communities we serve and for those who provide direct care at key points in our patients’ lives."
