Diokno/Lapides Essay Contest

Will your idea change the world?

Win the most prestigious urology prize in the world and have your innovative ideas recognized among those of the greatest urologists of the past 30 years.

The Diokno/Lapides Essay Contest (formerly the Jack Lapides Essay Contest) has been expanded this year to include submissions covering the entire field of voiding dysfunction. Essays will be judged by an independent panel. The winner will be honored among peers at the AUA National Meeting in May and be awarded $3,000.

Who can apply? The contest is open to all urologists, residents and fellows throughout the world, in both the private and academic setting. If the primary author is not a urology trainee or urologist, the essay must be co-authored by a urologist and sponsored by the Department or Section of Urology.

Deadline for submission is November 11, 2016.

Essay Requirements

The essay can be the work of an individual or a group. If the essay is submitted by a group, the first author will be considered the primary author and receive all correspondence. If the winner is a group, the primary author will be expected to present the paper and officially receive the award.

  • subject matter is limited to laboratory and/or clinical voiding dysfunction
  • manuscripts should conform to publication requirements for the Journal of Urology
  • identity of author and institution should not appear anywhere in the essay or on illustrations

A cover letter must accompany each essay, which must include:

  • principal author's name, address, phone, fax and e-mail
  • institution the author is trained at or is in training at
  • current institutional affiliation
  • name of sponsoring chairman
  • confirmation that essay has not been published or presented elsewhere

The essay format requirements include:

  • Manuscript - Microsoft Word (do not send a PDF), double-spaced text. Do not include any identification on the title page, any acknowledgements, separate page for legends and linked text.
  • Illustrations - 8.5" x 11" maximum Microsoft Word or JPEG (do not send a PDF). Include a legend with each figure, table, photo, etc.
  • Photos - 5" x 7" maximum size, formatted the same as illustrations

If the entire essay is too large to send as one file, divide the material and label sections and attachments clearly.

Awards and Prizes

Grand prize

  • Plaque to commemorate the award
  • Podium presentation at SUFU
  • $3,000 honorarium
    (This includes $1,000 to cover expenses incurred for recipient to present paper and receive award at the Diokno/Lapides Awards Reception held the Saturday before the AUA National Meeting. Expenses greater than $1,000 are the recipient's responsibility.)

Second place

  • Plaque to commemorate the award
  • $1,000 honorarium

Honorable mention

  • Certificate to commemorate award
  • $500 honorarium

Essays will be judged by an independent panel that will be blinded as to the essayist and institution. If the judges consider the pool of essays to be unworthy, awards may not be given and the award will be added to the next year's prize.
