Frequently Asked Questions - Biostatistics

When should I contact the biostatistics department?

Ideally, as soon as you have a research idea that you want to pursue.

Is there a charge for biostatistical services?

All our services are free of charge to Beaumont Health System medical and research personnel who are conducting research at Beaumont or utilizing Beaumont Health System facilities, patients or staff. We do not provide services to the public or to Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine projects.

Where are you located?

We are in the Technical Service Building across the street from the Administration Building (see map).

How do I make an appointment?

Please submit the Biostatistics Job Request Form. Once your form has been received you will be contacted by one of our biostatisticians to schedule an appointment.

How many times do we need to meet?

A successful collaboration between a researcher and a biostatistician depends on good communication. We recommend at least one in-person meeting to discuss your project. After that, depending on the difficulty of the study, we may need to meet in person other times in addition to phone and/or email conversations. We generally communicate by phone or email. However, clarification of the research question, discussion of the results, or interpretation of the analysis often requires an in-person meeting.

What information should I bring to my first appointment?

You should be ready to discuss your research goals, related questions and your project's deadlines. Please bring any research paper relevant to the study and your HIC or ACC approval letter (if the project is already approved). Make a biostatistics job request.

How long does it take for my data to be analyzed?

It depends on the complexity of your project and our current work load. We work on a first come, first serve basis but timing is also dependent on deadlines, complexity of the study, cleanliness and completeness of the data, and promptness of your feedback to us.

What services do you provide?

We will gladly help you with the statistical design and plan of your study. We can help you with guidelines on how to set up your database to record your data. Take a look at our comprehensive list of biostatistic services provided.
